Chile and Argentina pursued different paths and the results are in vivid contrast. Chile designed realistic policies that fitted its local conditions. Argentina followed what the IMF had dictated and waged a large scale of privatization, trade liberalization and de-regulation. These neoliberal policies resulted in a severe crisis in 2001-2002. This crisis had caused Argentina to go from being a very rich country one century ago to a nation ridden with many economic and social problems.
