To a certain extent, the Fujimori Phenomenon reflected the important changes in the political landscape of Latin America. The major characteristics of the transformation are: 1) those politicians whose power base was on the traditional parties were increasingly losing the popular support, which created a good opportunity for the political leaders of a new generation to rise on the political stage; 2) the large-scale reforms implemented by the new leaders reaped good results, but also brought forward many side-effects, leading to wide-spread disappointment by many people who suffered from the reform measures; 3) transformation in the political structure, along with significant changes in the social sector as well as the strong opposition forces, put the new leaders in an awkward position. It is interesting to note that the demise of the Fujimori Phenomenon came at a time when the left forces in Latin America have been on the rise.
